Book Review: Kissing Tolstoy by Penny Reid

Proceeds for the month of release go to hurricane relief efforts.

What do you do when you discover that your super-hot blind date from months ago is now your super-hot Russian Lit professor?

You overthink everything and pray for a swift end to your misery, of course!

‘Kissing Tolstoy’ is the first book in the Dear Professor series, is 46k words, and can be read as a standalone. A shorter version of this story (28k words) was entitled ‘Nobody Looks Good in Leather Pants’ and was available via Penny Reid’s newsletter over the course of 2017.

Short and Sweet: This will be near the top of my favorite books of the year.

I had no intention of picking up this book originally. There wasn’t much to go by synopsis wise and professor/student romances can be really iffy. I find a lot of them border on actually being creepy. But this novel is anything but weird or creepy.

When I found out the author was donating the sales for the first month to hurricane relief, I wanted to support that. So I bought the book and immediately started reading it so I could review it and do my part to get the word out. Well, I am fucking glad I did.

This book was amazing! Literally from the first page I was 100% invested in the story. I absolutely loved Anna and Luca. Anna is the most wonderful nerdy, geeky main character I have ever had the pleasure of reading about and Luca was completely fascinating to read. Their banter and conversations were so interesting, even though I barely understood it since I never delved into reading Russian Literature.

Their relationship started off so awkward but it was so much fun to read. Second hand embarrassment to the max, but I loved it. The attraction and tension between the two of them was damn near jumping off the page and all I wanted to do was read more.

The thing I love about Penny Reid’s novels is their smart romances. The characters are intelligent and quick witted. The writing is fantastic and not trashy or annoying. Even the sex scenes are so well written and tasteful but steamy as hell at the same time. Reid is an amazing author.

Such a fun, light hearted book. If you’re looking for something cute, steamy and quick to read, definitely pick this up. I’m so looking forward to reading more of this series.
