Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Mara Dyer believes life can’t get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

There is.

Short and Sweet: If you want something that’s different than your typical YA romance. Dive into this.

This whole book is the type that leaves you asking “wtf did I just read?” by the time you finish the last page. I don’t mean this negatively at all. This book, this series is absolutely amazing.

The problem is, is you follow Mara (not her real name btw) who just went through a horrible and traumatic accident that caused the death of her two friends and her boyfriend. She’s suffering with PTSD which ends up causing her hallucinations, bad dreams and a number of other symptoms. Mara is a completely unreliable narrator and that makes the book so much better.

It ends up being half way between a paranormal novel that makes you want to never turn the lights off ever, and some sort of psychological thriller. It’s so hard to pin point exactly what it is, but I love it.

I love Mara and her family. How supportive and amazing they are to her through all the problems she’s dealing with. The author did a really good job of demonstrating how much her family cares and how much they want her to just be better. Joseph was by far my favorite family member. He was just so quirky.

And of course I loved Noah. I loved how snarky he was and I loved the romance between him and Mara. A little insta-love-y, but they held out long enough for Mara to hate Noah first, so it’s acceptable.

I don’t think I’m going to reread the rest of the series. I just wanted to dip my toes back into this world before I read the Becoming of Noah Shaw. Look out for that review.
