Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic… forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined — animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner — a practitioner of dark, flesh magic — invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

Conclusion:
I was mildly terrified that I wasn’t going to enjoy this book since magic isn’t really something I enjoy anymore. But between Ceony, Fennel and Holmberg’s writing.. I am absolutely hooked.
Now, I’m not going to lie, this got a 4 star rating because the first 30% or so was so boring that I think I napped more than I read. It was just very very slow and I wasn’t seeing it going anywheres. But there’s always that world building that has to happen that tends to be the slowest part of the novel. After that, I was completely hooked.
The story was absolutely fascinating and the authors descriptions are amazing. Not too descriptive, but definitely enough that you get pulled into the story. I don’t want to give too much away but I loved the memory hopping that happened. I’ve never read anything like this before.
Also, I was mildly confused thinking this wasn’t a romance (because you know me, if there’s no romance I have a hard time sticking to it) but I definitely started seeing touches of it later and… Oh man. I am so here for Emery. That’s mildly weird to say considering I have a great uncle named Emery.. but I’m going to try to push that thought as far back as possible.
I’m super excited to read the next books. It’s a little low on my TBR right now because I have a ton of books to read.. but it’s happening.. you’ll see!
