Summary

Taken from Goodreads

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Feedback

This story was amazing. I’ve been looking for a creepy read for October because I love all things horror. While this book didn’t hit the “scary” factor for me, there were definitely parts of the story which were creepy. The story immediately pulls me in with Cass dealing with a ghost. Then we continue right into how him and his mom are moving again to deal with the ghost Anna Dressed in Blood. Oh, I just love the name! This story is never dull or boring and brings the audience in on this ghost chase along with Cass. It truly reminds me of a classic haunting story. The problems and situations Cass has to face really enhances the story, because who can really expect a ghost adventure to go smoothly? From Cass actually relying on other and making friends to the decision of whether or not he should really kill Anna. Then, the ending! Everything was just so well written and stayed true to being a ghost story.

I loved these characters so much. I absolutely adored Cass. His personality and the way he is so passionate just really makes it easy to follow him. From the beginning of the book, the readers really get a sense that he is the loner type and doesn’t really rely on anyone. The case of Anna Dressed in Blood is different where he has to get help from the civilians. Each character brought in the scenario plays a different role to determine Anna’s fate. There was a great development in the characters leaving me desperate to continue their story.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake has everything you need for your October reads. A flawless story with a great pacing really creates a great ghost adventure. Cass is truly perfect for his role and being able to see him rely on others than himself was a great way to progress the story. Everything combined so well that the creepy scenes will make you smile in anticipation! I highly recommend this book for those who are looking for that perfect ghost story for the season.
